Beach Art – Kauai December 18, 2009 No Comments

beach-art-web1

On a recent trip to Kauai, I came across this beach that was completely littered with drift wood.

Half of this art installation (the tall portion) was existing and I decided to add a spiraling crescendo.

My hopes are that people will continue to add to the piece until the whole beach becomes a giant gallery.

If you get the chance, I would highly recommend checking out the film called “Rivers and Tides” by Andy Goldsworthy.

Goldsworthy truly understands the attraction of creating outdoor artwork.

Bike Parks December 3, 2009 No Comments

Bike Park 1

I recently took a trip to Central and Northern California and I came across this world class bike

jumping park.  I spoke with some of the locals and found out that this spot has been evolving

for over ten years.  The size of the jumps have increased in size as the local riders skill levels progressed.

When a concrete skatepark is designed and installed, they typically never change.  The unique

thing about dirt jumps is that they are constantly evolving.

Unfortunately, this site it scheduled for demolition in a couple of years to make room for a new

shopping center.  A dirt jumping park  feels like a good match with the profession of

Landscape Architecture because of the constant evolution and change.  When we build with

concrete, metal, and wood over time the material weathers and decays.  In the instance of this

park, it was built and became more mature as the years progressed (like a plant).

If you would like to help save this park please send us an email (view contact page).
